Introduction:

(Levothyroxine,  also known as L-thyroxine) - Levothyroxine is used to treat hypothyroidism (a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone). It is also used in surgery and radioactive iodine therapy to treat thyroid cancer. Levothyroxine belongs to a class of drugs called hormones. It works by replacing the thyroid hormone normally produced by the body.

Without thyroid hormones, the body cannot function properly and can cause poor growth, delayed speech, lack of energy, excessive fatigue, constipation, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, thick skin, sensitivity to cold, joint and muscle pain, Cause severe or severe symptoms. Menstrual irregularities, depression. When taken correctly, levothyroxine improves these symptoms.

Dosage:

Levothyroxine is available as tablets and capsules for oral intake. In general, take once a day on an empty stomach, 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Take levothyroxine as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor. Swallow the capsule whole. Do not chew or crush. Do not remove capsules from pack until ready to take.

Swallow the tablet with a glass of water as it may choke and cause choking or choking.

To give levothyroxine to an infant, child, or adult who cannot swallow a tablet, crush the tablet and mix with 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 mL) of water. Mix crushed tablets with water only. Do not mix with food or soy formula. Give this mixture immediately with a spoon or dropper. Do not save for later use.

Your doctor will start with a low dose of levothyroxine and increase the dose gradually.

Side effects:

  • weight gain or loss
  • headache
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • fever
  • changes in menstrual cycle
  • sensitivity to heat
  • hair loss
  • joint pain
  • leg cramps


Levothyroxine can cause side effects. If any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away, see your doctor.
