Lamotrigine, which is also sold under the brand name Lamictal, is a medication that is used to treat epilepsy and stabilize bipolar disorder patients' moods. Lamotrigine belongs to the class of drugs known as anticonvulsants.
Uses:
Adults and children with epileptic seizures are treated with lamotrigine or other medications. Adults with bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) may also take lamotrigine to prevent mood swings.
When administered as part of a regimen that includes other medications for seizures, immediate-release lamotrigine can be used in children as young as 2 years old. However, children and adolescents under the age of 16 should not take this form as a single medication.
Dosage:
Lamotrigine is available as a tablet, extended-release tablet, oral disintegrating tablet (which dissolves in the mouth and can be swallowed without water), and chewable dispersible tablet (which can be chewed on or dissolved in liquid) that can be taken by mouth with or without food. Once daily, the extended-release tablets are taken. At the beginning of treatment, chewable dispersible tablets, oral disintegrating tablets, and chewable dispersible tablets may be taken once or twice daily.
Follow your doctor's instructions carefully regarding the timing and dosage of your medication if you switch to lamotrigine from another medication for seizures.

Even if you're fine, don't stop taking lamotrigine out of the blue. Seizures may increase if you stop suddenly. Taper your dose according to your doctor's instructions.

Side effects:
Serious side effects include a lack of red blood cells, an increased risk of suicide, Stevens–Johnson syndrome, and allergic reactions, which can be fatal.There are concerns that use during pregnancy or breastfeeding may harm.
Common side effects include nausea, sleepiness, headache, vomiting, trouble with coordination, and rash.
