What is Gemfibrozil? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects

Information

Gemfibrozil sold under brand names such as Lopid. It works by reducing the production of triglycerides in the liver.

Uses:

  • Gemfibrozil is used with diet to treat very high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with pancreatitis.
  • Gemfibrozil is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other heart complications in certain people with high cholesterol or triglycerides who have not benefited from other treatments.
  • Do not take gemfibrozil if you have severe liver, kidney, or gallbladder disease, or if you are also taking repaglinide, dasabuvir, or simvastatin.

Dosage:

Take gemfibrozil exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow all directions on the prescription label and read the medication guide or directions for use.Gemfibrozil is usually taken 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner. Follow your doctor's instructions.Gemfibrozil is only part of a complete treatment program that includes diet, exercise and weight management. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines very closely.Frequent medical examinations may be required. Even if you don't have symptoms, tests can help your doctor determine if this drug is working.Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat and light.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include headache:

  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • intestinal discomfort

Serious side effects include:

  • angioedema
  • gallstones
  • liver problems
  • muscle wasting
