Among others, ranitidine sold under the brand name Zantac. Ranitidine belongs to a group of drugs called histamine 2 blockers. It works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Uses:

Ranitidine is used to treat and prevent gastric and intestinal ulcers. It is also used to treat conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome ( a rare condition in which one or more tumors grow in the pancreas or upper small intestine ).


Ranitidine is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease ( GERD is reflux that occurs more than once a week for several weeks. Reflux means acid and food in the stomach return to the esophagus. GERD can cause other health problems over time, in which case it will not be treated. ) and other conditions in which acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus and causes heartburn.

Dosage:

Take Ranitidine exactly as directed on the label or as directed by your doctor.
Carefully weigh the liquid. Use the included syringe or dosimeter (not a kitchen spoon).It may take up to 8 weeks for the ulcer to heal. Continue using the medicine as directed and contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 6 weeks. Doctors may recommend antacids to relieve pain. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully about what antacids to use and when to use them.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • headache 
  • pain at the time of injection
  •  burning sensation

Serious side effects include :

  • liver problems
  • slow heart rate
  • pneumonia
  • possibility of masking stomach cancer
