What is Memantine? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects


Memantine belongs to a class of drugs called NMDA receptor antagonists. It works by reducing abnormal activity in the brain. Memantine may improve thinking and memory in people with Alzheimer's disease, or delay the loss of these abilities.


  • Memantine reduces the effects of chemicals in the brain that may contribute to symptoms of Alzheimer's disease( a brain disorder that affects memory, ability to think clearly, communicate, and perform daily activities and can cause mood and personality changes ).

  • Memantine is used to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease.

Memantine is available as oral tablets, solution , and extended-release  capsules. Solutions and tablets are usually taken 1-2 times daily with or without food. Take one capsule daily with or without food. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Remember to take your memantine dose at about the same time each day. Take memantine as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor.

Side Effects:

Some common side effects may include:

  • dizzy
  • confusion
  • invasion
  • depression
  • headache
  • sleepiness
  • constipation
  • nausea
  • vomit

Some side effects can be serious:

  • severe headaches
  • blurred vision
  • pounding in the neck and ears
  • seizures 
  • Abnormal mood
  • behavioral changes
