Acyclovir (ACV), also known as acyclovir, is an antiviral drug. It works by stopping the spread of the herpes virus in the body.

Uses:

Acyclovir is an antiviral drug used to treat the symptoms of shingles, chickenpox, cold sores, and genital herpes, all of which are caused by the herpes virus. It is also used to prevent regular outbreaks of genital herpes. Acyclovir does not eliminate viral infections, but it does help heal wounds faster and reduce pain.

Dosage:

Take acyclovir exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow all directions on the prescription label and read the medication guide or directions for use.Start taking acyclovir as soon as symptoms (such as tingling, burning, or blistering) first appear. Start taking Sitavig within 1 hour of first noticing core symptoms, before cold sores appear.Read and carefully follow all directions for use that come with your medicine. If you do not understand these directions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Do not crush, chew, suck, or swallow oral tablets.

Side Effects:

Some common side effects may include:

  • upset stomach
  • vomit
  • diarrhea
  • dizzy
  • Malaise
  • stirring
  • pain, especially joint pain
  • Hair loss

Some side effects can be serious:

  • hives
  • rash or blisters
  • itch
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • unusual bruising or bleeding
  • hematuria
  • abdominal pain or cramps
  • bloody diarrhea
  • decreased urination
  • headache
