What is Loratadine? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects

Loratadine, sold under brand names such as Claritin, is a drug used to treat allergies. These include allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and urticaria. It can also be used with pseudoephedrine, a decongestant known as loratadine/pseudoephedrine. Taken orally. Loratadine belongs to a class of drugs called antihistamines. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergy symptoms.

Loratadine is used to temporarily relieve the symptoms of hay fever (allergy to pollen, dust, or other airborne substances) and other allergies. Includes itchy nose or throat. Loratadine is also used to treat the itching and redness caused by hives. However, loratadine does not prevent hives or other allergic skin reactions.

Loratadine is available as oral syrup (liquid), tablet, and rapidly disintegrating (dissolving) tablet. In general, take this medicine once a day with or without food. Follow the directions on the package label carefully and explain any areas you do not understand to your doctor or pharmacist.Take Loratadine exactly as directed. Do not take more, less, or more often than indicated on the package label or recommended by your doctor. Taking more loratadine than recommended may cause drowsiness.

If you are taking a fast-dissolving tablet, follow the directions on the pack and remove the tablet from the blister without breaking the tablet. Do not try to push the tablet through the foil. After removing the tablet from the blister pack, immediately place it on your tongue and close your mouth. Tablets dissolve quickly and can be swallowed with or without water.
Do not use loratadine to treat bruises, blisters, abnormal color or non-itchy urticaria. Call your doctor if you have this type of hives.

If hives do not improve within the first 3 days of treatment, or if hives persist for more than his 6 weeks, stop using Loratadine and call your doctor. If you don't know what causes hives, talk to your doctor.
