What is Vitex Nirgundo? - Information, uses & side effect

  • Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree,[2] five-leaved chaste tree, or horseshoe vitex, or nisinda is a large aromatic shrub with quadrangular, densely whitish, tomentose branchlets.
  • It is widely used in folk medicine, particularly in South and Southeast Asia.
  • Leaves soaked in cold water whole night and are used as gargle to treat toothache, gingivitis, bleeding gums, halitosis and excessive salivation.
  • Pillow stuffed with its leaves is used to reduce headache.
  • The side effects associated with Vitex extracts are mild, reversible, and infrequent. They include gastrointestinal upset, urticaria, fatigue, headache, dry mouth, tachycardia, nausea, and agitation in less than two percent of patients.
