What is Simvastatin? Full information, uses, benefits and side effects.

Information

Simvastatin works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body, reducing the amount of cholesterol that builds up in artery walls and blocks blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. It belongs to a group of cholesterol drugs called reductase inhibitors or 'statins'.

Uses:

Simvastatin is used with diet, weight loss, and exercise to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes and to reduce the likelihood of needing heart surgery in people with heart disease or who are at risk of developing heart disease. Simvastatin lowers the amount of fatty substances such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”) and triglycerides in the blood and the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (“good cholesterol”). Side Effects:

  • Liver problems - nausea, pain in the upper abdomen, itching, fatigue, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).

  • amnesia or forgetfulness.
  • confusion.
  • itchy or red skin.
  • headache.
  • Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat.

Dosage:

The tablets are usually taken once a day in the evening. The suspension is usually taken once a day in the evening on an empty stomach. Take simvastatin at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take simvastatin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
