"What is Risperidone? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects"

Information

An antipsychotic medication known as risperidone alters how chemicals in the brain function. Risperidone, marketed under various brand names including Risperdal.

Uses:

  • Risperidone is used to treat schizophrenia symptoms in adults and teenagers over the age of 13 ( a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions ).
  • It is also used to treat mania ( a frenzied, abnormally excited, or irritable mood ) or mixed episodes ( symptoms of mania and depression that happen togethe) in adults, teens, and older children with bipolar disorder ( also known as manic depressive disorder; a condition that manifests as episodes of mania, depression, and other abnormal moods )
  • Adolescents and children between the ages of 5 and 16 who have autism ( a condition that causes repetitive behavior, difficulty interacting with others, and communication difficulties ) are treated with risperidone for behavioral issues such as aggression, self-injury, and sudden mood swings. Atypical antipsychotics are the medications that include risperidone. 


Dosage:

Risperidone is available as a tablet, a solution (liquid), and an orally disintegrating tablet, which is a tablet that dissolves rapidly in the mouth, for oral administration. Typically, it is taken once or twice daily, either with or without food. Risperidone should be taken at roughly the same times each day. Carefully follow the instructions on your prescription label.
Risperidone oral solution dose can be measured with the supplied dropper. The oral solution can be taken with coffee, orange juice, water, or low-fat milk. Tea or cola should not be taken with the solution.

Side effects:

Problems with movement, sleepiness, dizziness, difficulty seeing, constipation, and an increase in weight are all common side effects. The potentially lifelong movement disorder tardive dyskinesia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, an increased risk of suicide, and high blood sugar levels are among the serious side effects. It may raise the death risk in elderly people who suffer from psychosis as a result of dementia. It is not known if it can be used during pregnancy safely. It is not entirely clear how it works, but it is thought to be related to how it works as a dopamine and serotonin antagonist.
