What is Losartan? Full information, uses, benefits and side effects.


Losartan is a drug which blocks the action of certain natural substances that constrict blood vessels, making blood flow smoother and the heart pumping more efficiently.Losartan belongs to a group of drugs called angiotensin II receptor blockers. It prevents blood vessels from narrowing, lowers blood pressure and improves circulation.If you have diabetes, do not use losartan with medicines containing aliskiren (amturnide, tectanna, tecamlo, valturna). Also, if you have kidney disease, you may not need to take this drug with Aliskiren.

       Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Do not take Losartan if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant while taking losartan, stop taking losartan and call your doctor right away. Losartan can cause death or serious injury to a fetus if taken during the last six months of pregnancy. 


Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and protect the kidneys from damage caused by diabetes. It is also used to reduce the risk of stroke in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.Losartan belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It relaxes blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow.

Side Effects:

  • leg, knee, or back pain
  • muscle cramps or weakness
  • diarrhea
  • heartburn
  • decreased sensitivity to touch
  • Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.


Take losartan exactly as directed by your doctor. Follow all directions on the prescription label. Your doctor may change your dose for best results. Do not take this medicine in large or small amounts or for longer than recommended.
Losartan can be taken with or without food. Call your doctor if you continue to vomit or have diarrhea, or if you sweat more than usual. You can easily become dehydrated while taking this drug, which can lead to severe hypotension and serious electrolyte imbalances.
