In adults and children 12 months of age and older, montelukast is used to treat asthma and prevent symptoms like wheezing, breathing problems, tightness in the chest, and coughing. In adults and children aged 6 and older, montelukast is also used to avoid bronchospasm (difficulties breathing) during exercise. Additionally, adults and children 2 years of age and older who have the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (a condition that only occurs during specific times of the year) as well as adults and children 6 months of age and older who have perennial allergic rhinitis (a condition that occurs all year long).

Uses:
Montelukast prevents the constriction of your airways (caused by inflammation). Asthma episodes are avoided and breathing is made easier. Montelukast is typically taken in the evening once a day.It's crucial to continue taking it if you have asthma even if you are symptom-free.
You take montelukast together with your inhalers and other asthma medications.
Dosage:
To reduce the symptoms of asthma or allergies, most patients take montelukast once daily in the evening. But if exercise aggravates your asthma, your doctor could advise taking montelukast two hours before to exercise. Never exceed one dosage each day.
You can take montelukast at any time of day to treat allergic rhinitis. Take montelukast every day at roughly the same time. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any instructions on your prescription label that you are unsure about following. Take montelukast as prescribed by your doctor. Never take it in larger or less amounts or more frequently than directed by your doctor.
