Levetiracetam belongs to the class of drugs known as anticonvulsants. Epilepsy is treated with the drug levetiracetam, which is also sold under the brand name Keppra. It is taken orally as an immediate or extended-release formulation or by injection into a vein for partial-onset, myoclonic, or tonic-clonic seizures.
Uses:
In adults, children, and infants over the age of one month, levetiracetam is used alone or in conjunction with other medications to control partial-onset seizures. Adults and children over the age of 12 with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy are treated with levetiracetam in addition to other medications. Levetiracetam is also used to treat primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures, which were previously known as grand mal seizures; seizure that affects the entire body) in epileptic adults and children over the age of six. Dosage:
Levetiracetam is available as a solution (liquid), a tablet with immediate release, a tablet with extended release (long-acting), and a tablet for suspension (to take with liquid). Most of the time, the tablet for suspension, the immediate-release tablet, and the solution are taken twice a day—once in the morning and once at night—with or without food. Most of the time, the extended-release tablets are taken once a day, either with or without food. Every day, try to take levetiracetam around the same time. Carefully follow the instructions on your prescription label, and if you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor. Follow all directions when taking levetiracetam. Do not take it more frequently or less frequently than your doctor has instructed.
The levetiracetam extended-release and immediate-release tablets should be swallowed whole. try not to part, bite, or pound them. Take the entire levetiracetam tablets for suspension as indicated by headings; They should not be split, chewed, or crushed.
Peel the foil from the blister packaging of the levetiracetam tablet(s) for suspension with dry hands before taking them. Avoid attempting to force the tablets through the foil. Take the number of tablets your doctor has instructed you to take right away and put them on your tongue with a sip of liquid. Swallow the mixture when the tablet dissolves completely under your tongue. It might take about ten seconds for the tablet(s) to dissolve.
Side effects:
Levetiracetam can cause sleepiness, dizziness, feeling tired, aggression, and other side effects. Psychosis, suicide, and allergic reactions like Stevens–Johnson syndrome or anaphylaxis are serious side effects. Levetiracetam's safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding is unknown.
