Furosemide is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt. This directs the salt into the urine instead.Furosemide is used to treat fluid accumulation (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disease such as nephrotic syndrome.Furosemide is also used to treat high blood pressure.Furosemide belongs to a class of drugs called diuretics ("water pills"). Uses:
Furosemide is used alone or in combination with other drugs to treat high blood pressure. Furosemide is used to reduce excess fluid (edema) in the body caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. This relieves symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling of the arms, legs, and abdomen. This drug is also used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent stroke, heart attack, and kidney problems.Furosemide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes more urine to be produced. This helps your body get rid of excess water and salt.
Dosage:
Furosemide is available as tablets and as a solution (liquid) to be taken by mouth. In general, take once or twice a day. To treat edema, furosemide can be taken daily or only on certain days of the week. When used to treat high blood pressure, take furosemide at about the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Take furosemide as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor.Do not exceed the recommended dose. High doses of furosemide can cause irreversible hearing loss.
Side effects:
Dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, or blurred vision may occur as your body adjusts to the medicine.If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist immediately. This drug can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. If you have any unlikely but serious side effects, talk to your doctor right away.
