Brimonidine belongs to a class of medicines called alpha-adrenergic agonists. Brimonidine works by reducing the amount of fluid in your eyes.
Uses:
- Brimonidine ophthalmic is used to lower intraocular pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma [ glaucoma is an eye disease that causes vision loss in one or both eye ].
- Brimonidine Ophthalmic's Lumify brand is available without a prescription and is used to relieve eye redness and irritation.
- Brimonidine eye drops may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Dosage:
Ophthalmic brimonidine comes as a solution to be placed in the eye. It is usually instilled into the affected eye 3 times a day. Use brimonidine eye drops at approximately the same time each day, and allow approximately 8 hours between doses of 3 doses per day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Use Brimonidine eye drops as directed. Do not use more or less, or use more often than directed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of eye use include :
- itching,
- redness
- dry mouth.
Common side effects when used on the skin include:
- redness
- burning
- headache.
More serious side effects include allergic reactions and hypotension. Appears safe for use during pregnancy.
