What is Clindamycin? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects

Clindamycin is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of bacteria. Vaginal clindamycin cannot be used to treat vaginal irritation caused by yeast infections or sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and trichomoniasis.

Uses:

  • Clindamycin is used to treat severe bacterial infections.
  • Clindamycin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Dosage:

Vaginal clindamycin is available as a suppository to be inserted into the vagina and as a cream to be applied inside the vagina. Vaginal suppositories are usually applied once a day, preferably at bedtime, for three consecutive days. Most brands of vaginal creams are used once a day, preferably at bedtime, for 3 or 7 consecutive days. A brand of vaginal cream (Clindesse®) is usually used as a single dose at any time of the day. If you are using clindamycin multiple times in the vagina, use it at about the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Use vaginal clindamycin exactly as directed. Do not use more or less, or use more often than prescribed by your doctor.The medicine comes with instructions for use. Please read and follow these instructions carefully. Side Effects:

Some common side effects may include:

  • white spots in mouth
  • thick white discharge
  • vaginal pain
  • constipation
  • nausea
  • headache
  • back pain

Some side effects can be serious:

  • stomach pain or cramping
  • diarrhea
  • watery or bloody stools
  • fever
  • blisters
  • rash
