Hydroxychloroquine sold under brand names such as Plaquenil. It works by killing the organisms that cause malaria. Hydroxychloroquine may help treat rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus by decreasing the activity of the immune system.
Uses:
- Hydroxychloroquine is a quinoline drug used to treat or prevent malaria caused by parasites that enter the body through mosquito bites. This drug is not effective against all strains of malaria.
- Hydroxychloroquine is not effective against all strains of malaria, or against malaria in areas where infections are resistant to a similar drug called chloroquine.
- Hydroxychloroquine is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.
Dosage:
Hydroxychloroquine is available as an oral tablet. For an adult taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent malaria, usually he takes it once a week on the exact same day of the week. He begins treatment 1-2 weeks before traveling to an area where malaria is endemic, and continues treatment during his stay in the area and for 4 weeks after his return. For adults taking hydroxychloroquine to treat malaria, the first dose is usually given immediately, followed by another dose 6 to 8 hours later, and then another dose every two days. It is done. To prevent or treat malaria in infants and children, the amount of hydroxychloroquine is based on the child's weight.
