What is Donepezil? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects

Donepezil sold under the brand name Aricept.Donepezil is used to improve mental function in people with AD or Alzheimer's disease (AD is a brain disorder that causes memory loss over time. Part of the brain dies and can no longer produce normal levels of brain chemicals. This causes problems with thinking, acting and remembering things. occurs between the ages of 65 and 70, but can start early (the exact cause of AD is unknown.) Donepezil does not work the same for everyone. Some people taking donepezil have improved mental functioning, while others have had no change or even worse mental functioning.

Donepezil is not a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. This condition progresses over time, even in people taking donepezil.

Uses:

Donepezil is used to treat dementia in people with Alzheimer's disease ( a brain disorder that affects memory, ability to think clearly, communicate, and perform daily activities and can cause mood and personality changes ).  Donepezil can improve thinking and memory in people with Alzheimer's disease or delay the loss of these abilities. However, donepezil does not cure AD or prevent mental deprivation at a later date.

Dosage:

Donepezil is available in tablets and orally disintegrating tablets (tablets that dissolve quickly in the mouth). In general, take this medicine once a day, with or without food, just before going to bed. Take donepezil at about the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Take donepezil exactly as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor.

Side Effects:

Common side effects are:

  • nausea
  • vomit
  • diarrhea
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • Frequent urination
  • difficulty urinating
  • muscle spasms
  • joint pain, swelling, and stiffness

Serious side effects include:If you experience any of these symptoms, call your doctor or seek emergency medical attention right away.

  • syncope
  • slow heartbeat
  • chest pain
  • New or worsening breathing problems
  • new or worsening stomach pain or heartburn
  • black or tarry stools
  • red blood in stool
  • bloody vomiting
  • vomit that looks like coffee grounds


Donepezil may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you experience any unusual problems while taking this medicine.
