Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, also known as Co-Amoxiclav or Amox-Clav, is sold under brand names such as Augmentin. It is a combination of amoxicillin, a beta-lactam antibiotic, and potassium clavulanate, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Used especially for otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, pneumonia, cellulitis, urinary tract infections and animal bites. Take it orally or by intravenous injection.
Uses:
Amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate are used to treat various infections caused by bacteria such as: B. Pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, skin infections.
Dosage:
A combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is available as tablets, chewable tablets, extended-release (long-acting) tablets, and oral suspensions (liquids). Tablets, chewable tablets and suspensions are usually taken every 8 hours (3 times a day) or every 12 hours (2 times a day) at the beginning of meals. Extended-release tablets are usually taken every 12 hours (twice a day) with meals or snacks. Remember to take your amoxicillin and clavulanic acid at approximately the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Take amoxicillin and clavulanic acid as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, and allergic reactions. It also increases the risk of yeast infections, headaches, and blood-clotting problems. Not recommended for those with a history of penicillin allergy. Relatively safe to use during pregnancy.
