What is Cephalexin? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects

Information

Cephalexin, also called cephalexin, is an antibiotic that can treat a variety of bacterial infections. It kills Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria by interfering with the growth of the bacterial cell wall. Cephalexin is a beta-lactam antibiotic that belongs to the class of first-generation cephalosporins. Works similarly to other drugs in this class, including intravenous cefazolin, but can be taken orally

Uses:

Cephalexin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria, including upper respiratory tract infections, ear infections, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and bone infections.

Cephalexin is used to treat infections in adults and children older than 1 year of age.
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to cephalexin or similar antibiotics such as ceftin, cefzil, or omnisef. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medicine, especially penicillin or other antibiotics.

Dosage:

Cephalexin is available as capsules, tablets, and an oral suspension (liquid). It is usually taken every 6 or 12 hours with or without food for 7 to 14 days, depending on the condition being treated. Take cephalexin at about the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Take cephalexin as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor.

You should feel better for the first few days of treatment with cephalexin. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, talk to your doctor.

Continue taking cefalexin until the end of your prescription, even if you feel better. If you stop taking cephalexin too quickly or skip a dose, the infection may not be fully treated and the bacteria may become resistant to the antibiotic.

Shake the liquid well before use to mix the medicine evenly.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include an upset stomach and diarrhea. Allergic reactions and infection with Clostridium difficile, which causes diarrhea, are also possible. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding does not appear to be harmful to the baby. Available from children to people aged 65 and over. People with kidney problems may need to reduce the dose.

Disclaimer:

Please consult your doctor/physician/specialist before taking any healthcare products. In case of allergic reaction to the medicines/substance, please take immediate medical help.
