Hydralazine is marketed under the brand name Apresoline. Hydralazine is a vasodilator, which relaxes the muscles of blood vessels to help dilate (dilate) them. .It relaxes the blood vessels and smoothes the flow of blood throughout the body. Administer orally or intravenously. Effects usually begin after about 15 minutes and last up to 6 hours.
Uses:
Hydralazine is a drug used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. These include high blood pressure during pregnancy and very high blood pressure leading to symptoms. Along with isosorbide dinitrate, it has been found to be particularly useful in treating heart failure in people of African descent.
Dosage:
Hydralazine comes as an oral tablet. In general, take 2 to 4 tablets daily. Take hydralazine at about the same time each day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to clarify any areas you do not understand. Take hydralazine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less, or more often than directed by your doctor.
Hydralazine controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. Continue taking hydralazine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking hydralazine without talking to your doctor.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include headaches and increased heart rate. Not recommended for people with coronary artery disease or rheumatic heart disease affecting the mitral valve.Lower doses are recommended for patients with kidney disease. Hydralazine belongs to the family of vasodilators, so it is thought to work by dilating blood vessels.
