What is Famotidine? Full information, usage, benefits and side effects

Information

Histamine H2 receptor antagonist Famotidine, which is also sold under the brand name Pepcid, reduces stomach acid production. Famotidine was patented in 1979 and first used in medicine in 1985. It can be purchased as a generic drug.

Uses:

Ulcers in the stomach and intestines can be treated and prevented with famotidine. Additionally, it treats conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, in which the stomach produces too much acid.
Additionally, famotidine treats GERD and other conditions in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus, resulting in heartburn.
This medication's Zantac 360 brand does not contain ranitidine, which was taken off the market in the United States.

Doses:

Famotidine prescribed by a doctor can be taken orally as a suspension (liquid) or as a tablet. Typically, it is taken at bedtime or two to four times daily. Famotidine can be purchased over-the-counter in tablet, capsule, and chewable forms. Typically, it is taken once or twice daily. To forestall side effects, it is required 15 to an hour prior to eating food varieties or drinking drinks that might cause acid reflux. Carefully follow the instructions on your prescription or the package label, and if you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor. Follow all directions when taking famotidine.

Side effects:

  • bafflement, agitation, and a lack of energy;
  • an epilepsy;
  • heartbeats that are rapid or pounding, sudden dizziness (like you might pass out); or muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness that is unrelated to anything else, especially if you also have a fever, unusual tiredness, and dark urine.

Common adverse effects of famotidine include:

  • headache;
  • dizziness; or having diarrhea or constipation.
