Ezetimibe belongs to the cholesterol-lowering class of medications. It works by preventing cholesterol from being absorbed by the intestine.
Uses:
Ezetimibe is a cholesterol-lowering medication for people with high blood cholesterol. Ezetimibe works by making your body take in less cholesterol from your intestines. Your risk of heart disease can be increased by having high cholesterol, which can cause fatty deposits to form in your blood vessels.
Patients whose cholesterol levels cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone are treated with ezetimibe.
Ezetimibe is available as a single-ingredient tablet or as a combination tablet containing simvastatin and another cholesterol-lowering medication.
Dosage:
Ezetimibe can be taken orally as a tablet. Typically, it is taken once daily, either with or without food. Take ezetimibe at the same time each day to help you remember to take it. Carefully follow the instructions on your prescription label, and if you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor. Ezetimibe should be taken as directed. Do not take it more frequently or less frequently than your doctor has instructed.
Keep on taking ezetimibe regardless of whether you feel great. Without consulting your physician, you should not stop taking ezetimibe.
Side effects:
Ezetimibe's side effects include the following:
- diarrhea;
- cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat;
- pain in an arm or leg;
- joint pain; or
- muscle pain while taking ezetimibe with a statin.
