Influenza Treatment

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by a virus. It can cause mild to severe illness, and sometimes lead to death. The good news is that the flu can be treated, and there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of getting the virus.

Antiviral Medication

• Antiviral medications are prescription drugs that can be used to treat the flu. They work by targeting the virus and preventing it from multiplying.
• These medications are most effective when taken within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
• Common antiviral medications for the flu include oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and zanamivir (Relenza).

Immunizations

• Immunizations are the best way to protect yourself from the flu.
• Getting vaccinated each year can help reduce the risk of getting the virus, as well as reduce the severity of symptoms if you do get sick.
• The flu vaccine is available as an injection or nasal spray.

Home Remedies

• It is important to rest when you have the flu, as this will help your body fight the virus.
• Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water, juice, or warm soups, can also help replenish lost fluids and ease congestion.
• Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) can also help relieve symptoms of the flu.
• Honey can also be used to soothe a sore throat.
