What is Prashniparni? - Information & uses

  • Prishniparni (Uraria Picta), also known as Dabra, Pithavan, Dhavani, Chitraparni, Agniparni and Sittirappaladi, is an important herb in Ayurvedic medicine. One of the Dashamulas, it is a combination of 10 different herbal roots. It is found in Nepal, India, China and northern Australia. In India, it is widely distributed in Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal. Prishnipalni's amazing health benefits have made it one of the preeminent herbs of Ayurveda.
  • The roots of the Prishnipalni plant are widely used in Ayurveda to treat a variety of health conditions.Prishnipalni balances all three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha.
  • It has a bittersweet flavor and stimulating effects. The main chemical constituents of Prishniparni are alkaloids, saponins, flavonoids, glycosides, proteins, steroids, tannins and phytosterols.
  • It also has aphrodisiac, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antibacterial, and antidiarrheal properties.
